Washington and Du Bois

One of the most debated topics when it comes to improving the black community is the difference in philosophy between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois.  There philosophies helped hone the way black leaders think and it opened the minds of the black people both from the North and the South (Moore, 2003, p.89).

The major difference between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois is Washington believed that blacks or the enslaved people should endure discrimination and slavery for the meantime and focus on working hard so that the white people will somehow see their potentials and accept them gradually as part of the society. Washington believed that the African Americans should gain education and cultivate patience to be fully integrated into the society. He also built the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute and is now known as the Tuskegee University.

On the other hand Du Bois believed that Washingtons philosophy will only tolerate white oppression. He helped establish the NAACP and he advocated political action. He also formed the so-called Talented Tenth, a group of college educated African Americans that will lead the others away from slavery and oppression.

I believe that Washingtons philosophy was more appropriate than Du Bois during their time because I think he was looking at a long-term solution to slavery. He prioritized education for African Americans first before dwelling into a more radical action. I think that his choice of action is much better because he helped improve the race equality in America through proper education.

Though this does not mean that Du Bois actions are inappropriate, Washingtons patience and belief in self help inspired others to gain reputation and freedom through proper training and education and thus resulted to the acceptance of the African Americans in the society today.
