Glory -The Movie.

Glory is a story of unacknowledged heroism during the Civil War. The 54tht Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was composed of all-black Americans. It was headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw, son of an abolitionist. His experience brought about by the Battle of Antietam pushed him to lead the 54th Regiment. His overtly aggressive attitude during the training showed his determination to build an army that can stand through war. He knew what a real war feels like so he encouraged his army to do their best. The black soldiers dealt with unfair treatment from their government. The courage they have shown to sacrifice their lives in order to fight for their country was not properly compensated, or even acknowledged. Private Trip, a hothead runaway slave who joined the army was a brave man who knew how to voice out the sentiments of his fellow black soldiers. They were not given the thirteen-dollar monthly wage given to their white counterparts. Considering that the Civil War was fought mainly on behalf of black soldiers, they were deprived of the privileges being given to the white comrades. The black soldiers experience during the Civil War could be regarded as double struggle. They risked their lives for a country which did not support them evenly. However, behind their misfortune is a silver lining. The black soldiers did not dwell on pessimism. Glory is not just about the battles the soldiers have faced but their strength and commitment to the country. The movie also captured how the soldiers gave importance to their camaraderie on and off the battlefield. Their common goal even took their lives which proved that heroism is not justified by a single color.

It is sad how racism breaks nations. Just imagine the heroes who risked their lives yet they were ignored by history because of their color. The loss of their lives which saved their country was easily forgotten due to lame reasons. Until now, the attitude towards blacks is generally unfavorable. The color serves as an invisible barrier within a nation. I still do not get why the blacks were marginalized. No matter what race you represent, you have the right to live the way others do. There is no reason why the white Americans should feel superior over the blacks. America is known for its strong state yet it has a weak sense of nationhood. It is such a shame for them to invade other countries and help them build a nation afterwards but the white Americans themselves failed to acknowledge their own brothers.

Discrimination eats the ego of a person. The worst case of this is racism since the people being discriminated cannot do anything about it. They were judged because of their color not because of what they did or what they are capable of doing. Ones color cannot fully define his capabilities. The black Americans had to do extra efforts to earn the respect of the white Americans. They were born to prove their worth. A black American has to undergo several challenges before he could stand out.

The racism, as shown in the movie is just of one form. Other faces of racist behavior include abuse, harassment, racist propaganda and property damage. It also includes exploitation of employees. Ethnic cleansing is an extreme case of racism. The victims of this kind of discrimination had to develop their coping mechanism in order to feel a sense of belonging while keeping their dignity.

In the movie, I admired the optimism of the black soldiers as well as their dedication and love for their country. Even though their fellow Americans gave them countless reasons to make them feel that they are not accepted, the black soldiers stood for their right to fight for their country. They risked their lives without asking for proper compensation. The movie is heartbreaking. It was a picture of selfless love. It was great to see the soldiers regard all their struggles as victory.

After all the struggles of the blacks, history cannot ignore the United States of America 2008 elections. For the first time, a black American finally had the chance to rule his country. Black Americans all over the world celebrated this victory. Most of them cried for joy, hoping that their ancestors were also there to experience such breakthrough. Obama earned the respect f his fellowmen, even the white ones. Obama proved that even politics can be penetrated by the blacks and that leadership does not take any color.

It is inspiring how the black Americans of today fought hard to get the honor and respect they deserve. They went through hard work by achieving this. However, this does not mean that we should get used to the presence of such discrimination and just learn to deal with it. It is unfair for the black Americans to make extra effort just to be recognized while watching the white Americans living the easy life. We must put an end to racism to the point that will no longer be remembered. In the movie, the black soldiers showed a picture of heroism. However, the rest of the black people need not do the same thing in order to be recognized. We must learn to accept everyone as our brother regardless of his color.
