EXCELLENCE OVERWEIGHS LONGEVITY WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE

The above statement believes in mans ability to realise his dreams, given the will power to do so, regardless of the various social, economic and political structures that go against him and one such person who truly exemplifies this thought is Dr. Martin Luther King whose tribute to the world in helping remove racism and providing equal rights for Blacks in a society where they were discriminated and abused shows his achievement in bringing world peace and harmony.

Early life
Martin Luther King attended segregated schools in Georgia and passed out from high school at the age of fifteen in Atlanta and then later carried on to graduate from Morehouse college, an distinguished institution in Georgia in the year 1948. He then studied Theology at the awarded the B.D in 1951. He then enrolled in Boston University for graduate studies and passed out with his degree in 1955.

His struggles and achievements
In 1954, Martin Luther King became a pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama. Martin by now was deeply involved with the ongoing battle for equal rights for Blacks in America. By this time, he was already a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the advancement of coloured people, one of the leading forums available for Blacks during that time in the United States of America.

The first protest led by him was in Decembe 1955, where he led one of the greatest nonviolent demonstrations of contemporary times which sought equal rights for Blacks in the society. This protest had lasted for 352 days and finally came to an end on December 21, 1956 when the Supreme Court of the United States declared segregation in public places unconstitutional and therefore, punishable by law. This was a major achievement of his in bringing the Black community at par with the whites of America. During this time he was subjected to various kinds of abuse and torture and even had his home bombed once but he never gave in to his oppressors and continued to fight for the cause that he stood for.

In 1957, he became the president of the southern Christian leadership conference. This was an organisation established to promote the civil rights movement that had started during this time.
Martin Luther King was deeply influenced by Gandhis ideologies and Christian beliefs. Within a span of eleven years from 1957- 1968, he addressed the public various times, made speeches across the world to promote the issue of the civil rights of the Blacks. One of the major struggles that he led was the one in Birmingham, which moved the world audience and gave his cause the much needed support, finally making it a worldwide concern rather than pertaining to   the Black community alone. In his historical march to Washington D.C, he delivered his celebrated speech, I have a dream. He was not just a leader of the Black Americans but also a world figure. At the age of thirty five, he became youngest man to have received the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Not only did this man realise his dreams of seeing an equal society for the Blacks but also achieved it at such a short span of time. He truly stands for excellence, integrity and the ability to move the world when one decides to do so. He gave the Blacks the right to be on an equal footing with the Whites for which he would always be remembered.
